Toy Balloon, Bred by Ralph Moore, Visalia California, 1979.

'Toy Balloon'Breeding: 'Fairy Moss' X 'Fire Princess'.
Of the several Mini Moss hybrids that have been bred by Ralph Moore, for some reason this is one that has slipped into obscurity. (For no good reason, as far as I can see!)

'Toy Balloon' is a very compact miniature, growing to a height of about 18 inches at maturity, producing its deep red blooms singly and in groups of 2 or 3. The individual blooms are about 1 to 1.5 inches across, and last a long time, opening slowly. They are of decorative form, not show form, which likely explains the poor ARS rating. As you can see, the color is very deep and velvety rich. The buds are quite mossy, with balsam scented glands that smell when rubbed.

This is a fine little miniature that is fast becoming one of my favorite Mini Moss Roses.

ARS merit rating: 5.6
Personal merit rating: 7.5
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 5 through 10.
Shrub size: approximately 18" tall, by 12" wide.

Fragrance: 0.5, slight scent, moss is balsam scented when touched.
