Scentsational,
Harmon Saville, USA 1995.
In
the past I
have not grown many miniatures, mainly because they rarely offer any
fragrance, and scent is something I have come to pretty much expect
of my roses. Well, a friend of mine who's in the business of growing
minis sold me this rose in 1998, and I am suitably impressed with it.
It is a nicely vigorous plant, well foliated with dark, red tinted leaves
which are reasonably disease resistant. (In the summer of '99, Scentsational
got Blackspot rather badly in June.)
The bloom is about 1.5 to nearly 2 inches across, and under most atmospheric
conditions, it is powerfully fragrant. The scent is very Damask-like...very
"elemental rose". I can't say that I like the color as much as some
of my roses.....I do not like the so-called "blue" Hybrid
Teas, and the color of Scentsational is reminiscent of that. It is most
often on the mauve side of mid-pink, which is quite acceptable. I suspect
that it got both it's fragrance and color from Angel Face at some point
of it's breeding. If you like miniatures, but are disappointed in their
scentlessness, then this is the rose you might like.
