This exquisite Miniflora from Sequoia Nursery has an interesting story to tell. Several years ago this seedling was selected from the cross of 'Joycie' X 'Playboy' and was soon discarded during the culling process, likely because of its size. (It wasn't until recently that the larger growing Miniatures were recognized as viable in their own right and designated "Minifloras"; plants that were large growers, often displaying blooms that exceeded a size that was considered acceptable for a true Miniature.) Well, this lovely apricot seedling was given to Sue Salvatore who worked at the nursery at the time. Sue was a close friend of Carolyn Supinger's, general manager of the nursery. Sue took the rose home and gave it a place in her garden. As it matured and showed its true potential, Sue brought blooms back to her employer to show them off. It was deemed worthy of a second evaluation and plants of it were started once again at the nursery. Tragically, Sue died of cancer in 2002 before the rose was ready for release. And so, Sequoia Nursery has named the rose in honor of the woman who salvaged it from certain doom among the other discarded seedlings. A loving tribute to a very kind and gentle woman this rose is, and it is every bit as beautiful as such a rose should be. Thanks indeed to Sue for rescuing this wonderful rose for all of us to enjoy.
