Pink Poodle, Bred by Ralph Moore, Visalia California, 1991.

'Pink Poodle' is brand new to me this spring. (2001) I first saw this rose in bloom at Sequoia Nursery the first time I met Ralph Moore. That would be September of 1999. (I rode to Visalia on my Motorcycle that Labor Day weekend, and it was about 120F on the Interstate! I had to keep a bottle of water with me at all times and douse myself frequently for the evaporative cooling effect!) See my Ralph Moore page for more about his work with miniature roses.

Sorry, I'm rambling! Mr. Moore showed me a plant of 'Pink Poodle' that afternoon, and I have to admit that while I certainly remember the plant, it didn't impress me as much as other roses I saw. However, it's unique form and beauty stuck in my mind, and this year I have included it in my collection of Moore miniatures. I like the way the petals reflex back to make a domed blossom when fully open, and the bright white center and candy pink halo effect is really showy. One of the parents of this rose is 'Old Blush', the ancient China rose. Happily, 'Pink Poodle' has inherited a strong fragrance from 'Old Blush', which some people say is reminiscent of Sweet Peas. I can see that comparison, myself. I am looking forward to growing this unusual rose, and I will add more information about my experience with it as the season progresses.
