Scarlet Moss, Bred by Ralph Moore, Visalia California, 1988.

Scarlet Moss is one of the most recent of Ralph Moore's Miniature Moss roses. It is a sturdy, dependable rose that I have come to like a lot in the few years I have grown it. As many miniatures are, this rose is tough and very winter hardy, much more so than many HT's and Floribundas.
The medium sized (2 inch) blooms are a wonderful deep, rich scarlet-crimson color, just like the photo here. The bloom itself has no fragrance to speak of, but the mossing has the characteristic balsam scent that many Moss roses possess.
There is some tendancy for the mossy buds to develop some mildew, but it's not much of a problem. I find that a water spraying every day will keep mildew at bay much of the time. This is a fine little rose that is impossible to miss in the garden with its glowing red blooms. It repeats reliably throughout the season. I am starting to use this rose in my breeding program as it passes the Mossing genes on very easily. (This is turning out to be a VERY valuable breeding cultivar, so make note hybridizers!)
