Un-named seedling, Bred by Paul Barden, 2001

Over the past few years, I have been very careful when choosing which roses to use as parents in my breeding program. I now tend to use seed parents that have a proven track record, using new or unknowns only sparingly when trying new things.

In the case of this seedling, I have matched two very sucessful, but very different parents. The seed parent, 'Rise 'N' Shine' is a well known and much beloved yellow Miniature from 1977, and has been used often in breeding programs. The pollen parent, the English rose 'Abraham Darby' is also well known and has played an important part in the breeding program of David Austin. The result of this mating is the seedling you see here. A bit large for a true Miniature, this would fit more reasonably into the "Miniflora" designation, as it will gradually build size up to 24" tall.

The blooms you see here are between 2 and 2.5 inches across. Blossoms are often borne singly, but also in clusters of 7 or more. These blooms open slowly over several days, holding their form very well. Depending on weather conditions, the color can be more of a pink-peach blend, or a clear peach-yellow hue, as shown in this photo. Foliage is dark green and semi-glossy. The over all plant is very bushy and tidy, with excellent vigor. As far as I can tell, disease resistance is about average for a Miniature, which is to say that it will get Blackspot when weather is right for disease.

I have not yet made a final evaluation of this seedling, and want to give it another year before I decide if its merits are sufficient to warrant introduction. At this point, chances are good that it is worthy!
