Schoener's Nutkana,
bred by Father George Schoener
Father Schoener, fondly referred to by his admirers as "Padre
of the Roses" was at one time a resident of Brooks, Oregon
where he bred roses. (There is another of his roses which was rediscovered
by Bill Grant in Brooks, and has been re-introduced into commerce under
the name 'Bill Grant') This was one of his hybrids which has survived
in commerce. It was created by crossing the old Hybrid Perpetual 'Paul
Neyron' with the native species, Rosa nutkana.
Single
blossoms of about 4 inches across are produced in profusion in early
summer, and sporadically after that. In some climates it is a spring
bloomer only. The blooms are very nicely scented, and look like a very
much improved R. nutkana! This really is a very beautiful shrub, and
I am glad it is still in commerce. Be sure to look up Father Schoener's
Hybrid Perpetual, 'Arrilaga', which is also a fine rose. (coming soon!)
