Star
of the Nile,
bred by John Clements, introduced 2000.
This
is a year 2000 introduction from Heirloom Rose in St. Paul, Oregon,
the well known nursery owned by John and Louise Clements. I saw this
rose in the display beds last summer and while in some ways it is just
another deep pink English style rose, it has one of the most extraordinary
fragrances I have encountered in a while. (However, if you are NOT a
fan of the Austin "Myrrh" fragrance, then avoid this one also)
It has a very intense, heady Anise sort of fragrance, which I am a fan
of. It's not to everyone's liking though.
I
can't tell you much about the shrub yet, as I have only recently acquired
it for my own garden. (Photograph taken at Heirloom's nursery) It appears
to be a strong and healthy shrub of typical English rose habit, growing
rather upright to about 4 feet tall. It was blooming profusely when
I saw it, and the blooms come in small clusters, each flower being about
4.5 inches across. The color is a smoldering blend of deep pinks and
a paler pink backside on the petals, definitely a lovely color! The
fragrance scores a perfect 10 from me!
I
will be interested to see how 'Star of the Nile' performs in
my garden, and I will update my assessment when I have more to say.
This is a rose I would grow for fragrance alone.
