Un-named seedling , bred by Paul Barden, 2001.

Un-named sedling from 'Abraham Darby'Breeding: 'Abraham Darby' X self.

Note: This seedling performed very poorly in the garden and was removed in 2005.

Here is one of two open pollinated seedlings from 'Abraham Darby'. There is a second seedling grown from the same lot that I am also growing for evaluation, and it looks like that one may turn out to be a climber.

This is a nice looking plant with twiggy, compact growth, and looks like it may remain within a 3 foot hieght range. The blooms are medium sized; about 3 to 4 inches across, filled with crumpled petals and usually showing a button eye. Often, as with the blooms you see here, there is a green pip at the center as well. The fragrance is very similar to its parent; a rich and fruity rose scent.

It's nice to find seedlings like this growing from open pollinated seed, and encourages me to explore 'Abraham Darby' as a parent more often. I have used it extensively last year as both a seed a pollen parent, and will publish the results when I have some to report. Last season, I made a cross of the miniature, 'Rise 'N' Shine' with 'Abraham Darby', and have kept one seedling for evaluation. It is very much like a miniature version of 'Abraham Darby' on a 15" tall plant with miniature foliage. I have also crossed the famous breeding Miniature 'Sheri Anne' with 'Abraham Darby' and have hopes that some nice results will come from the cross.

I encourage hybridizers to experiment with 'Abraham Darby', as it has clearly been a useful parent for David Austin, and is showing great potential in my own work.

ARS merit rating: none
Personal merit rating: under evaluation.
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 6 to 9, zone 5 in a protected location.
Shrub size: 2 to 4 feet tall, depending on climate.
Fragrance: 2.5 little fragrance.
