Wedding Cake, bred by Raph Moore. Date and parentage unknown. Introduced 2006.
('Sheri Anne' may have been the seed parent)

This rose takes the cake when it comes to peculiar modern hybrids! This un-named hybrid has been a test variety at Sequoia Nursery for many years. Sadly, no information was recorded about its breeding and so the identity of its parents is not known. It has been deemed unsuitable for commercial release because it does not perform well in cool wet weather.

In a way, this is a difficult rose to describe; it will gradually build up a fairly large shrub to about 4 X 4 feet if not heavily pruned. The foliage is dark green and quite healthy, and resembles Holly at times in shape. The blooms are often produced one to a stem, but the more vigorous canes will produce small clusters of 3 or 5 as well. Individual blooms are 3 to 4 inches across, and have such heavy petals texture that they feel as though they are made of plastic! I have counted up to 300 petals to a bloom. Newly opening blooms are an interesting tan-peachy pink hue, and as the bloom matures, it shifts to coral-pink and finally tan and green! You can see a hint of the green coloring in the upper photo. These blooms often last for 4 weeks or more on the plant.

Unfortunately this rose does not always perform well in cool wet weather, and can suffer problems in extreme hot weather as well. (Blooms fail to open properly) Those who do acquire it should recognize the fact that it may not do well in all climates and all seasons.

Please note that this rose will finally be released into commerce in Spring 2006 by The Uncommon Rose. Yay!
