October Moon, bred by Paul Barden, 2006.

Breeding: 'Rise 'N' Shine' X 'Its Showtime'

October MoonA new introduction for 2006. For many years I have worked with Miniature varieties in my breeding work and have encountered many full-sized roses among the many Miniature offspring from crosses using Miniatures X full-sized roses. In this instance, the yellow Miniature 'Rise 'N' Shine' was the seed parent. The pollen parent is a Hybrid Tea that came from a cross of 'Joycie' (Miniature) X 'Bon Silene' (Tea). And so, 'October Moon' is one quarter Tea! You can, in fact, see the Tea characteristics in both the twiggy, bushy growth habit, and the shape of the blooms. The petals are often folded down the midrib and are piled layer upon layer, just like a Tea bloom.

The plant grows about 3 to 4 feet tall in most climates, and a bit less wide. It is not overly thorny. The plant is twiggy like a Tea, but also very Floribunda-like, with its clusters of three or more blooms. Foliage is semi-glossy and quite handsome. It appears to have good disease resistance. I wish 'October Moon' had more fragrance to offer, but it has only a mild scent.

ARS merit rating: 7.8
Personal merit rating: 8.0
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 6 to 9, zone 5 in a protected location.
Shrub size: 2 to 4 feet tall, depending on climate.
Fragrance: 2.5 little fragrance.
