Dragon's Blood, bred by Paul Barden. To be introduced in 2007. Breeding: [('Little Darling' X 'Yellow Magic') X "Grandmother's Hat"] X 'Brown Velvet'. This cross was made as an experiment in 2003, and the seed was germinated in 2004. This plant was one of only 4 seedlings, and to date, the other 3 have not yet flowered. It seems that although the seed parent is fairly remontant, many of its offspring are once-bloomers. This plant flowers freely all season long. 'Dragon's Blood' was a very odd seedling when it first flowered, with its 10 petals in an odd hue of orange and a strange purple overlay. The truth is that it was almost discarded in the first year, except that its great vigor encouraged me to hang on to it. By the end of year two, it had filled out into a 5 X 5 foot shrub, well branched and constantly in flower. The bloom color improved dramatically, often taking on a deep mahogany hue not unlike that of 'Jocelyn' . It flowers in clusters of up to 20 bloms on the larger canes, each bloom about 3" in diameter. There is a slight fragrance. Look for its introduction in 2007 by The Uncommon Rose. ARS
