Paul
Neyron, bred by Levet, France 1869.
'Paul
Neyron' is one of the most frequently grown of the Hybrid Perpetual
class. It produces huge blooms....often as much as 6 or 6.5 inches
across, repeats its bloom cycle frequently and reliably, and is a
robust, easy plant to grow. Considering the fact that many of the
roses in this group are a bit tight with their rebloom, 'Paul Neyron'
certainly stands out for this one feature alone.
The
shrub itself is an upright plant, as are most of the Hybrid Perpetuals,
producing clusters of bloom at the ends of the new growth. Foliage
is large and dark green, and quite disease free, even without chemical
sprays. It has very good cold hardiness as well, making this an excellent
first choice if you are considering trying a rose of this group. The
only drawback is that for such a fine looking bloom, it has only a
mild fragrance.
ARS
merit rating: 8.0
Personal merit rating: 8.5
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones
5 to 9, zone 5 in a protected location.
Shrub size: 4 to 6 feet tall.
Fragrance: 3.0, mild fragrance, but it varies from person
to person. Some people say it can be very fragrant.
