Unnamed seedling, bred by Paul Barden, 1998

'Tuscany Superb' X 'Othello'Breeding: 'Tuscany Superb' X 'Othello'.

This rose is currently being used for breeding purposes only, although it is beginning to show some garden-worthiness in its own right. It has proven to be extremely Blackspot resistant, and is making a sturdy, arching shrub with pleasant form. In time, I may decide to releaseit if it continues to perform as well as it currently does.

Individual blooms are about 4 inches across, and have 12 to 20 petals each. There is a pleasant fragrance, but it is mild compared to that of its English parent. The color of the bloom is a shimmering medium crimson that changes to a darker crimson as it ages. The foliage and overall plant habit is very Gallica-like, with a tendancy to grow larger than most Gallicas, ie; 5 feet or more. This rose gets a lot of comments from visitors to my garden when it is in bloom.

ARS merit rating: None
Personal merit rating: 8.0, but under assessment.
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 3 to 8, zone 4 in a protected location.
Shrub size: unknown, likely 4 to 5 feet tall X 4 feet wide.
Fragrance: 3.0, mild Gallica scent.
