'Allegra', bred by Paul Barden, 2003
I bred this rose in 2000 and have been studying it for the past 3 seasons. In the Spring of 2003 it was apparent that this rose was truly hitting its stride. I have seen few OGR style roses that performed as beautifully as this rose did in 2003. The plant itself has excellent vigor, beautiful, lush foliage that is rarely troubled by Blackspot or Mildew, and the full blooms have an excellent fragrance. Individual blooms are about 4 inches in diameter, containing about 120 petals each. Occasionally the blooms are produced one to a stem, but most often there are three or five to a stem. Flowers open sequentially on the inflorescences, which extends the flowering period to almost 6 weeks here in my garden. (Climate variations will dictate how long the bloom period is) The fragrance is somewhat like its pollen parent 'St. Swithun', with a kind of anise-like tone, but more sweet and "Old Rose" in value. Gallica hybrids in this color range are rare, and I'd like to think that this hybrid will be a valued addition to its class. The name was chosen to honor a dear friend of mine who fell in love with this rose when she first saw it. She has exquisite taste in roses, of course ;-) ARS
