"Deep
Purple",
bred by Paul Barden, 1998.
This
is another Gallica rose from my own breeding program. It was a seedling
from last year, and in May of 1999 it bloomed for the first time. (Most
of the Gallica hybrids take one to two years before they bloom for the
first time) The photograph here doesn't do this rose justice...it is
a much richer color with the most wonderful shimmering highlights....like
velvet. It's the sort of color that the Gallicas are famous for. The
bloom is not very large: about 2.5 inches across, but I imagine that
it will be bigger as the plant matures. There is a typical Gallica scent,
although it is light. I cannot comment yet on the size of the shrub,
as this is still a small plant in a 2 gallon pot. I will be watching
this one carefully, and have hopes that it will be worthy of naming
next year. This is a cross of the Moss rose 'Nuits de Young'
X 'Tuscany Superb'
