'Sissinghurst
Castle',
precise date and origin unknown.
Also
known as 'Rose des Maures'. This rose was discovered
growing in the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle when the gardens were
cleared in the early 1900's by Vita Sackville-West. It was brought into
commerce in 1947. It is likely a known cultivar that has lost its identity
through time, or it may be a chance seedling. We shall likely never
know.
'Sissinghurst
Castle' is very much like 'Tuscany Superb'
in overall style and bloom. However, 'Sissinghurst Castle'
is a taller, more arching shrub, in my experience. Some growers think
this rose is the better of the two, but I prefer 'Tuscany Superb'
by far. (Both are excellent roses, comparisons aside) This is an excellent
rose to include in any collection of old European Roses.
