'Complicata',
history unknown. Possibly a R. gallica X R. canina or R. macrantha hybrid.
 This
is the simple rose with the complicated name!
We don't know much at all about 'Complicata' and its history,
but that doesn't detract from its exceptional beauty. It has often been
described as one of the most beautiful of all the single roses. Indeed,
there is something special about 'Complicata's "wild-rose"
like blooms and habit. This is often grown as a climbing rose as it
will form a very tall shrub of about 15 feet if allowed to grow up into
an apple tree, for example. I suspect it would form an equally beautiful
free-standing shrub if given the room to do so. I plan on growing mine
in this manner to see what its natural form will be.
As
with all of the Gallicas, 'Complicata' blooms once a year in
early summer, but over a fairly long period of 4 to 6 weeks. The blooms
are very large: up to 5.5 inches across! The foliage is a beautiful
grey-green hue, and quite disease free. This rose will appeal to those
looking for a nearly thornless shrub, as it has very few thorns. Some
reports suggest that it is alo quite shade tolerant. This is a sublimely
beautiful rose, and I would think it would be suitable for a "cottage
garden" style setting.
