'Nestor', possibly by Laffay, circa 1841, France. There is some confusion as to the exact identity of this rose, as the one we have today that goes by the name 'Nestor' does not fit the descriptions written while it was originally in commerce. Whatever its real name may be, its a fine rose, Suzanne Verrier says, "Be wise and place this rose in your garden; in mine, it is one of the most appreciated roses. Hardly just another pink!" I agree.....often it displays blooms with dark smoky tints of near-mauve layered with the warmer pinks and palest mauves to create a romantic blend of colors. After several years evaluation in my garden I can safely say that this is most assuredly a fine addition to my Gallica collection. Sturdy, trouble-free growth, beautifully formed, well-scented blooms and one of the easiest shrubs to grow, 'Nestor' has earned a permanent place in my garden. ARS
