'Duc de Guiche', bred by Prévost, France, pre-1813. Also known as 'Sénat Romain'.

'Duc de Guiche'This is a fine Gallica that has long been on my list of roses to grow, and I obtained this plant from Pickering last fall. It is still young, but it produced some very nice blooms this spring.

This is a fairly typical crimson Gallica, and is considered a fine representative of the class. It has medium sized, arching growth and disease free foliage of an attractive medium green. Bloom color is variable with weather and soil conditions, but is generally a crimson hue, with darker splashes of purple and magenta. As you would expect, there is a fine fragrance. As shown here, the 3 to 4 inch blooms often show a green eye at the center. This is a fine rose, well worth growing in a collection of Old European Roses. As with all Gallicas, this rose blooms once a year in early summer.

'Duc de Guiche' is one of the roses that Empress Josephine grew in her gardens at Malmaison.
