'Cardinal de Richelieu', bred by van Sian of Holland. Introduced by Laffay in France 1840.
It has been said by several authorities, David Austin, for one, that this rose needs to have its older growth removed periodically to perform to it's best ability. I have seen some evidence that this is true. The three year old growth on my established plant produced the smallest and fewest blooms last year. It apparently does well with generous treatment as far as nutrients is concerned. Since I have adopted more of an organic approach to gardening in the past few years, I tend to feed the roses with manure products and fish emulsion fertilizers only. I feel that this creates a healthy rose that is more resistant to disease, as a natural soil organism population is encouraged to grow. Artificial fertilizer salts tend to discourage soil organisms, which can be stressful to the plants growing in it. I also use a vitamin B complex on all of my plants, and I have seen evidence that this has a profound effect in creating a very healthy root system. You might want to try this. The compound I use is called Superthrive, but there are others available. 'Cardinal de Richelieu' is available from The Uncommon Rose.
