Rougemoss,
bred by Ralph Moore, Visalia California, 1972.

Breeding: 'Rumba' X 2-63-5.
'Rougemoss'
is another of the full-sized shrub Moss Roses that Ralph Moore developed
along the way in his search for Miniature Mosses. This is a Floribunda
type shrub, densely branched bearing 3" rich scarlet blooms in
small clusters of 3 or more, and occasionally singly. There is a slight
fragrance to the blooms, but the moss has a strong balsam scent when
rubbed. The bush itself is compact and well-behaved, but is fairly prone
to blackspot, and can be slow to repeat. If you want a rose that will
perform as a showpiece, this is not a good choice. However, if you are
interested in the Moss shrubs and like the 'Collector's items', then
this is well worth growing.
For those of you
who are interested in the evolution of thise hybrid, here is a key to
the crosses made in the creation of 'Rougemoss':
2-63-5 = 12-59-10 X 7-58-01
12-59-10
= PINOCCHIO X WILLIAM LOBB
7-58-01 (PINK MOSS) = RED RIPPLES X O.M.
O.M. (ORANGE MOSS) = MARK SULLIVAN X GOLDEN MOSS
While little has
been done with 'Rougemoss' since its creation, it is likely well worth
exploring as a parent to create new Moss roses.
