Loan Hulse, bred by Paul Barden. Registered April 2003.

Breeding: 'Scarlet Moss' X 'The Prince'. This is a sister seedling of 'Mel Hulse'.

This Moss hybrid was one of three seedlings I kept from the cross of 'Scarlet Moss' X 'The Prince' that I made in 1999. (The third seedling has since been discarded) While the bloom form is not as nice as 'Mel Hulse', the color of this rose is excellent; a deep glowing crimson with darker splashes as the blooms age. There is only the slightest of fragrance to the bloom, but the mossy buds are quite fragrant when touched.

The shrub itself is upright in form and grows to about 4 feet tall. The foliage is dark green and glossy. Indications are that this rose will perform best in climates where summers are warm.

ARS merit rating: 8.1
Personal merit rating: 8.5
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 5 to 8, zone 5 in a protected location.
Shrub size: 6 to 10 feet tall.
Fragrance: 4.0, strong Old Rose scent.
