Comtesse de Murinais, bred by Vibert, France 1843.

Comtesse de MurinaisAs sometimes happens, I came to know this beautiful Moss rose entirely by accident. I had purchased another Moss rose a while back, and when it bloomed, it turned out to be this one, and not the one I thought I had bought. Tags get mixed up at the nursery...that sort of thing. I rarely get upset about it when it happens because inevitably, I am introduced to a new variety that way!

'Comtesse de Murinais' is one of the taller Mosse roses, of the Centifolia type. It's a tall shrub growing to about 6 feet in height, sometimes more in a warmer climate, and fairly upright. Very intensely thorny canes are well clothed in foliage. Sweetly scented blooms are produced once a year, over a 4 week period. Individual blooms are quite large, opening a pale blush color, and fading quickly to nearly pure white.

ARS merit rating: 7.5
Personal merit rating: 8.0
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 5 to 8, zone 5 in a protected location.
Shrub size: 4 to 7 feet tall, depending on climate.
Fragrance: 4.0, strong Centifolia scent, mixed with sweet, classic rose fragrance.
