"Nightmoss #3", bred by Paul Barden
This plant has been one of the slowest to build up to significant size, but it is also the most shapely of the shrubs of this bunch. It now stands 18" tall, and is well covered in handsome greyish green foliage. It has been disease free for me so far. (Bonus!) Individual blooms are small: about 2 to 2.5 inches across, and reflex to form a pompon shape. There is a moderate, smoky/spicy scent also, very much like the Gallica fragrances....not exactly sweet, but earthy and spicy. It's hard to describe! I have no intention of naming this rose or releasing it into commerce. It is the least free-blooming of the three, and the blooms last one or two days only before burning to an unsightly blackish color in the sun. It might do better in partial shade, but its too slow a grower and has little to receommend it when compared to other, better varieties. ARS

This
is a sister seedling to "Nightmoss #2" and "#1".
All 3 came from the same seed hip, in fact! There were only about 7
seedlings from that sowing, and 4 of them turned out to be worth keeping.....very
unexpected. (I think perhaps I should make that cross again
some day!)
