"Nightmoss #1", bred by Paul Barden, 1998. This is another of the Moss hybrids I obtained from a cross of 'Nuits de Young' X 'Tuscany Superb'. The color is a rich, velvety purple, much like the other cultivar, but this one tends to open fully to display stamens. Although I like fully double blooms, I also enjoy open blooms like this...the contrast between the petals and the stamens is wonderful. There is a very nice fragrance that is rich and a kind of earthy, smoky rose scent. As were both of its parents, this will be a once-blooming variety, blooming for a period of about 4 weeks in early summer. At this point, it is hard to evaluate the plant fully, as it is still just a large seedling. (Still in a 5 gallon container, the plant is about 3 feet tall) It has a habit that is very similar to its mossy parent, with many small prickles covering the canes, and smallish dark green foliage. A very attractive plant in my estimation. Like both of its parents, it will undoubtedly be quite winter hardy to at least zone 5, I would think. I have no plans to market this rose yet......but perhaps if enough people found it desirable, I would think about it. ARS
