"Epplett Street Moss seedling", bred by Paul Barden, 2001.

un-named moss seedling
This rose came about as a selection from a group of open pollinated seedlings from an unknown Centifolia Moss hybrid. The parent (unidentified) was a thicket forming plant of about 2.5 feet all, bearing cupped silvery pink blooms with highly mossy buds. This seedling is currently being evaluated for garden value in my test beds. The plant has remained at about 2 feet in height, and has not suckered far from the parent plant. The foliage and overall shrub habit is very attractive, and the blooms are very beautiful in the Old Garden Rose form. As did its parent, this cultivar blooms once a year, in early summer.

The blooms are produced in clusters of 3, and sometimes singly over a period of several weeks in early summer, and they open well even in wet weather. There is a very strong "old rose" fragrance that is typical of this group.

I have no plans to introduce this variety, as it doesn't really have anything to offer that most of the named varieties from 150 years ago offer. However, it is a nice, compact plant with elegants buds and well formed blooms, so it remains in my garden for evaluation.

ARS merit rating: none assigned
Personal merit rating: 8.0
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 5 to 8, zone 5 in a protected location.
Shrub size: unknown, currently at 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide.

Fragrance: 4.0, strong Old Rose scent.
