The Impressionist, by John Clements, USA. 2000.

Breeding: 'Distant Drums' X 'Graham Thomas'.

This is one of the "English style" roses bred by John Clements and introduced by Heirloom Roses in St. Paul Oregon.

This is something different in that it is really the only English style rose in a climbing form. Keep in mind that this is more of a pillar rose than a true climber, in that its canes are stiff and its growth habit very upright. It will be best trained up a wall or a tall support structure, rather than trained horizontally on a fence, for example.

'The Impressionist' blooms quite freely, with very large blooms in a glowing blend of peach, oranges and yellows, often 5 or more to a cluster. Needless to say, the fragrance is powerful and seductive. It is a vigorous rose that makes a lot of growth early in its life, and its not unreasonable to expect 10 feet of growth from it in the first 2 seasons, assuming good soil, culture, and plenty of water. My only reservation is its disease resistance; while touted as quite disease resistant, I have found that during the wet Spring and Fall weather, it will Blackspot very easily if not sprayed. Perhaps this will improve with time? Otherwise, this is a fine new climber with many sterling qualities, and anyone who likes the Austin roses will enjoy 'The Impressionist'. Just be prepared to deal with fungal diseases should they be a problem in your area.
