'Guinée',
bred
by Mallerin, France, 1938. Breeding: 'Souvenir de Claudius Denoyel'
X Ami Quinard'.
This
dark red rose is considered to be one of the very best of the blackish-red
climbers. Technically this is a very large Hybrid Tea, but because of
its growth habit, it is included in the Climbers. As is usually the
case with the climbing Hybrid Teas, rebloom after the first spectacular
flush is modest at best. Don't be deterred by this fact, though, as
mine has bloomed on and off throughout the season. Even one or two blooms
on this rose are worth it if for just the magnificent perfume. It's
the kind of fragrance that have made legends of older roses.
This
is a large rose of fairly stiff, upright habit that is best grown with
strong support, such as an exposed wall. Bloom performance is best when
canes are trained horizontally as much as possible. Still a very fine
rose, 'Guinée' should be seen more often, where space permits.
