Jayne Austin, Austin 1990, Breeding: Graham Thomas X Tamora

Jayne AustinJayne Austin was new to my garden last summer (1998), and I had not commented much on its qualities until now. After only one year with this rose, I have much to say about it, and it's all good! In my opinion, this is the nicest of all the apricot colored roses...better than either Evelyn or Abraham Darby. Why? Because the plant is stronger, much more disease free, and the blooms are consistantly of the most superb quality.

All summer long, Jayne Austin produced blooms just like the one you see pictures here. They are generally produced in small groups of 3 to 5, and they have an intense Tea fragrance. The scent is exceptionally refined and powerful, which is one feature that attracted me to it. The color is slightly variable, ranging from a rich apricot to a combination of peach and light yellow, as you see here. Rebloom is excellent, and in early December, I still had a few late blooms hanging on.

As I said, this variety has superior disease resistance to many of the other Austins. While Gertrude Jekyll, and Abraham Darby suffered badly from Blackspot this year, Jayne Austin was completely healthy.

This is an upright shrub in form, growing much taller than wide. It would possibly make a good piller specimen, or tall rose for the back of a border. This is currently my favorite Austin rose.
