Verschuren,
bred by Verschuren, Netherlands 1904.
While
most roses that display mottled white and green pigmentation on their
foliage are indeed suggering from a viral infection, 'Verschuren'
is one of the very few roses whose variegated leaves are genetic in
origin. Fortunately the variegated foliage is not this rose' only feature.
The soft pink blooms of clear, unsullied coloring and the strong, sweet
scent are also qualities 'Verschuren' possesses.
This
is a more compact, shrubby HT than some, growing as wide as it is tall:
about 3 X 3 feet for me. This is a treasure of a rose and well worth
growing in any collection that includes vintage HT's. I love its fragrance.
I
got mine from The
Uncommon Rose.
ARS
merit rating: NA
Personal merit rating: 7.5.
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones
6 to 10, zone 5 with considerable protection.
Shrub size: 2.5 to 4 feet tall X 3 feet wide.
Fragrance: 4.0, strong sweet fragrance, a hint of "Old
Rose".
