Nigrette, bred by Krause, introduced by Conard-Pyle, 1934.

Breeding: 'Château de Clos Vougeot' x 'Lord Castlereagh'

Considered by Gregg Lowery to be one of the best of the small-statured "black" Hybrid Teas, 'Nigrette' indeed has some fine qualities. Rich fragrance, exquisite velvety-black-red coloring and compact growth habit. It makes a perfect container rose, in fact, because of its size. This is a must for any collector of the "black" red Hybrid Teas.

ARS merit rating: NA
Personal merit rating: undecided.
Hardiness: Likely USDA zones 6 to 10, zone 5 with considerable protection.
Shrub size: 2 to 3 feet tall X 2 feet wide.
Fragrance: 4.0, strong sweet fragrance, with a hint of "Old Rose".
