'Star Magic', bred by Ralph Moore, California 1995.
Another of the curious hybrids to come out of 'Muriel' is 'Star Magic', from the same parents that produced 'Out of Yesteryear'. ('Sequoia Gold' X 'Muriel') It is a very vigorous groundcover style of shrub, growing to about 2½ feet tall, and spreading to as much as 8 feet wide. Blooms are 2" across, and single (5 petals) in a blend of soft yellow and medium pink. (A pink bloom with a pale yellow and white center.) Flowers are produced in astounding numbers in the spring, with scattered bloom throughout the rest of the season. As with most of the Bracteata hybrids, the foliage is a dark glossy green, and makes for a very attractive shrub even when not in full bloom. Because the seed parent was a Miniature, the foliage is quite small and creates a soft "fern-like" impression in the garden. The overall effect is one of a ground-hugging shrub with a very beautiful "species-like" charm. It's hard to believe that this came from the same breeding that gave us 'Out of Yesteryear'!
