Gruss an Teplitz, introduced by Geschwind, Hungary, 1897

Gruss an Teplitz is one of very few truly red Old Garden Roses, and is very much sought after for that reason. Depending on the author, this rose may be classified as either a China Hybrid, or a Bourbon.

I have found so far that like others of the Bourbon group, this variety is too much inclined to either mildew or Blackspot. I will give it a couple more seasons before I decide what I think of it though.

The brilliant red semi double blooms open fully to display the stamens at ethe center, and there is a moderate sweet fragrance. Blooms are usually produced in large clusters that open sequentially over a period of time, and it reblooms very well all season. As I say, its only real fault is a tendancy to blackspot too easily.
