"Un-named Seedling", a miniature climbing tea. Bred by Paul Barden, 2001. Not yet in commerce.

For several years now I have made various attempts at using 'Gloire de Dijon' as a parent in my breeding program. It has a history of producing many look-alike Teas in both shrubs and climbers, but it has not been used in the creation of Miniatures, as far as I know. Last year my one big attempt with it was in making the cross 'Rise 'N' Shine' X 'Gloire de Dijon', which resulted in only a few seeds, and even fewer seedlings. This seedling is one of only three that were kept for evaluation.

This particular seedling grew reasonably well in its first year, but did not bloom. Such seedlings are often culled out from other breeders programs, but I kept it, thinking that as long as I had room for it, it could stay! Fortunately for both me and the plant, it bloomed this Spring, producing luminous pink and yellow blend blooms with a very pleasant scent. It now grows as a small climber, with long arching canes at least 4 feet long (it will likely get much larger!) that bloom at every node along its length. This is a trait it inherited from 'Gloire de Dijon'. As a bonus, it reproduces easily from cuttings, just like its seed parent, 'Rise 'N' Shine'. I think it will require another year or two to evaluate its potential before I decide to do anything with it. We shall see!
