Rosa bracteata, species first identified in 1675, China. Also known as 'The McCartney Rose'.

Rosa bracteataThis is a lovely species, known for its incredible vigor and beautiful foliage. The fragrance of the bloom is often compared to the smell of Acetone, an assessment I agree with. R. bracteata is a large, climbing species from warm parts of China and has naturalized in the southern United states. It is not reliably Winter hardy in cold climates.

This is the species that brought us hybrids like 'Mermaid' and the fascinating Hybrid Bracteatas of Ralph Moore's breeding.
