Rose a Parfum de l'Hay, bred by Gravereaux, France 1901.
Although it is listed as being no more than 4 feet tall, my plant which is not quite in place one year, some canes have reached six feet in height. It is quite upright, sending many thick canes from the base, much in the style of some Hybrid Perpetuals. Densely thorny, it is best placed where people will not brush against it, trust me! The blooms are fully double in the Hybrid Perpetual style and deeply cupped. As can be expected with its lineage, the blooms are powefully fragrant with the typical rugosa scent, mixed with other fragrances too. I find it to be very nicely scented. It has been said that Rose à Parfum de L'Hay can be faulted for its tendancy to mildew late in the season, which I have seen myself. It is not very bad, though, and can be ignored. I would not hesitate to have this rose for this minor health issue. It is so very vigorous that it doesn't cause any problems. This is a very beautiful member of the Rugosa family. Sadly, I have had to remove this rose from my collection, as it was very prone to both Rust and Mildew. ARS

Rose
à Parfum de L'Hay is one of the nicest of the red/magenta Rugosa hybrids.
It is believed to be a hybrid of mixed origin: ((R. damascena X Gén.
Jacqueminot) X R. rugosa germanica) Ploidy = 21/ triploid. It will rarely
set seed, but it can be used as a pollen parent with some success.
