'Konigin
von Danemark',
bred by Booth/Flottbeck, possibly of Germany, 1826 .
This
is one of the most beautiful of the Alba clan! It is a fairly compact,
well-behaved shrub compared to the larger whites, like 'Semi-Plena',
which tend to be very large. The blooms are perfection, each and every
one, and open sucessively in clusters of 3 to 7. Perfume is also excellent,
and in my experience, the shrub is disease free.
Peter
Beales says in his current edition of Classic
Roses, "Superbly scented, this rose is an excellent ambassador
for the Albas as a whole."
The
foliage is a dark green, but not the same blue-green color as most of
the Albas, and as such, there is speculation that this is a hybrid with
some Damask parentage. The strong sweet fragrance betrays this possibility
also. Disease resistance is excellent, and it is completely winter hardy
in all but the coldest zones. This is an excellent rose for the beginner.
