Duchesse de Rohan, Breeder unknown. Date: pre-1860.

'Duchesse de Rohan'
Very little is known about this rose, its origin and history obscured by the passage of time. In many ways, this is a typical Centifolia rose....the characteristic rich pink coloring, full-petalled blooms with rich fragrance, and arching growth habit all indicate Centifolia influence. However, to our benefit, 'Duchesse de Rohan' has the ability to produce a modest repeat of its bloom throughout the season! I have a plant that is 2 years old now, and it produced several flushes of bloom from May through October.

'Duchesse de Rohan' is a fairly large shrub, acheiving a mature height of 5 feet by 4 feet wide, with an upright, slightly arching habit. In all likelihood, it will be completely hardy to at least zone 5, and possibly colder than that.

Peter Beales has suggested that this may in fact be a primitive Hybrid Perpetual. I tend to agree, as the upright growth habit and regular repeat of bloom is very much like a Hybrid Perpetual. Either way, this is an excellent rose, and one of my absolute favorites for fragrance.
